ceramics painting houston
Where is there a full service ceramic shop in the Houston area?

I don’t want the painting studios, I am looking for greenware, bisque, and glaze paints, specifically large selection of greenware and bisque. thanks

There is Katy Ceramics in downtown Katy and there is E&H Ceramics off Griggs and South I-45. I shop at Katy and they have alot of greenware and bisque to choose from. They have a new owner and she has alot of new stuff in and rotating new stuff. They sell supplies and Duncan paints and I believe also Mayco paints. E&H has alot of greenware too and they sell Mayco Paints, they are off Evergreen and Griggs. Katy Ceramics has classes too and does clay throwing too.

how can we get acoustic help…!?

hi… my boss has a property and he made virtual offices out of it by using glass patitions, perphorated cieling tiles, and ceramic flooring… the design was nice but now we’re facing acoustic and sound proofing problems… any suggestions?
thanx…

All of the glass and ceramic floor tiles make the sound bounce around, so if you add fabric that will absorb sound. How about draperies or a large tapestry hanging? Some rugs on the floor will help, too.

What are some ways I can integrate metalsmithing into a ceramics project?

I am starting my student teaching in January in a highschool ceramics classroom. My teacher would like me to teach a ceramics project that integrates some metalsmithing. I really enjoy metalsmithing but I am no expert. Does anyone have lesson ideas, assignments you may of done, or a website that would give me tips on metalsmithing?

What kind of metalsmithing you’ll do depends a lot on what kind of tools you have available. What kind of metalsmithing have you done?
Blacksmithing requires an entire different set of tools than repousse and raising bowl from sheet metal requires again a different set as well as different techniques. There are lot of different methods and styles and it’s impossible to give a sufficient explanantion of all.
A good book on metalsmithing is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Silversmithing-Jewelry-Crafts-Rupert-Finegold/dp/0801972329

at least I like it. It’s recommend to first check it out from the library to see how it works for you. You can also check your library for other craft oriented books which could give you an idea.
for good blacksmithing websites google “anvilfire”.

You could also check out artists who combine glass and metal, and get some inspiration from them. Bella Feldman is one whose work I like, but I am sure there are lots.

clay and ceramics
Can I fire clay in the stove?

I wanted to know if there is ceramic clay to make tiles that you can fire in a stove. i always see those cool painted tiles that seem shaped also at festivals and would really love trying to make some. I dont’ have access to a kiln so i was wondering if there is clay out there that can be fired in a stove and if so for how long?
and if i can, where can i buy clay?

Houshold ovens don’t get to a high enough temperature to fire ceramic clay.

There are other sculpture mediums that DO harden in an oven, such as Sculpy modeling clay. But this material does not harden to the same consistancy as ceramic. Nor does it harden to a glazed surface. Materials such as Sculpy are typically painted after the baking process.

Check with the help at a local art and craft supply store to see what other materials are available.
